How to Properly Care for Your Leather Shoes

Leather shoes require special care because leather can dry out and begin to crack over time. Obviously, shoes that are cracked and falling apart are not going to be something you want to be seen wearing, if they are even able to be worn in such a condition. Thankfully, taking care of your leather shoes does not require a lot of time or energy. If you follow these five easy steps, your leather shoes will last a long time and you will get many years of wear out of them.
The first step in taking care of your leather shoes is to prepare your cleaning area. You should have newspaper to work on so you do not get any of the cleaning or polishing agents on your floor or carpeting. You should have the following cleaning and polishing supplies: clean, soft rags or other cleaning cloths, a soft shoe brush, smooth leather shoe cleaner, leather conditioner, shoe polish, and an optional leather protectant. Make sure you are working in an area that has plenty of ventilation because some of the chemicals used in shoe cleaners and shoe polishes can be toxic and should not be inhaled for extended periods of time. You may also wish to wear a pair of disposable gloves to protect the skin on your hands from these toxic chemicals as well.
The next step in taking care of your leather shoes is clean the shoes. You should take dry brush to any large dirt particles and clean the remainder of the dirt off of the shoes with a leather cleaner such as saddle soap. Take care not to get the shoes overly wet as you do not want to the leather to absorb a lot of water. Once you have removed the dirt, wipe and dry the shoes with a soft, dry, cotton cloth.
The next step in caring for your leather shoes is to condition the leather. There are many leather conditioning products available on the market, so make sure you choose a conditioner that will work for your specific type of shoe and follow the directions on your chosen conditioner. Conditioning the leather will keep it soft and supple and less likely to dry out and crack.
The next step in taking care of your leather shoes is to polish your shoes. You should take care to choose a polish that is not only the proper formulation for your type of shoes, but also one that matches the color of the leather as closely as possible. If you can not find a good color match, you can purchase a clear polish. Once you have applied and buffed off the polish, you may wish to apply a coat of leather protectant.
If you have neglected your shoes and feel they are no longer able to be worn, do not fret. There are various companies that may refurbish and renew your shoes. You simply drop off or mail your shoes to the company, and your shoes will be returned looking almost brand new.

The romanticized idea of a business man or traveling man has him walking from his taxi or airplane to his final destination with a briefcase in hand. Today, the briefcase has been replaced by the shoulder bag. Many people instantly think “Hey, that’s just a fancy purse!” This is simply not the case. The shoulder bag is larger, more flexible, and more versatile than the standard briefcase, giving the user more storage space and less strain since it can be carried over the shoulder.
The shoulder bag is a business man’s best friend. The bag can hold a laptop computer and its accessories. The bag will hold documents safely without bending or crinkling them. Most shoulder bags will hold multiple binders or folders, allowing you to carry as much as you need. These bags come with multiple compartments and dividers, giving you the option of separating documents as needed, or carrying other needed accessories. Most shoulder bags come with a compartment meant for holding pens, business cards, identification and credit cards, and other paraphernalia that a business man needs when traveling or moving between home and the office. If you need to take it with you, it will likely fit in the shoulder bag.
Many people have been turned off to shoulder bags due to some misguided view of manliness. To many men, the briefcase is what you should carry, while anything that goes over the shoulder is nothing but a glorified purse. With the rise of “metro-sexuality” and the trend of functionality and style over old stereotypes, shoulder bags have become more and more accepted by a wider range of men in society. Most men are sold on the idea when they carry a shoulder bag for a short period of time. If you have ever seen the show “Friends,” you might remember the episode where the character Joey Tribiani, a stereotypical alpha male, is convinced by his friend Rachel to wear some more contemporary clothes and carry a shoulder bag. He balks at the idea first, calling it a “man purse,” but is quickly turned after carrying the bag. When Rachel asks for the bag back, he loves it so much he does not want to part with it. Many men in real life have gone through the same transformation, going from feeling silly carrying something so close to a lady’s purse to not being able to live without the shoulder bag.
The shoulder bag is superior to the briefcase in most ways. It has more space, is better at separating documents and accessories, and is easier to carry. A briefcase only has a small handle, which if it is loaded too heavy can put a lot of strain on the users wrist and arm. Carrying a briefcase for long periods of time can be cumbersome and painful. The shoulder bag allows the user to carry much more weight comfortably across his shoulder, evenly distributing the weight in a way that is easier for the human body to handle.
