If the recent “Climategate” scandal has taught us anything, it is that nothing good can come from having your personal data exposed. Whether you are a fan of the scientists involved or not, you can surely recognize that their personal and professional information would have caused less trouble had it remained private. Can you imagine what might happen to you if your personal data became compromised? With the nature of most people’s personal information, they would be more than embarrassed, as the climate scientists are, they would likely be open to identity and monetary theft.

What kind of data do you keep on your personal computer and your company’s network? We all have financial information, private emails, personal pictures, sensitive business data, and other files that are best kept secret. If the information were to get into the wrong hands, your personal life could be adversely affected or your business could be devastated. What can you do to keep your files safe? An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. To keep unwanted people and programs from accessing your computer or network, invest in a firewall program and virus protection. These two items will work in tandem to ensure that outside entities cannot access your machines to steal your data, and to ensure that hidden programs cannot work from inside to send your personal information to somebody waiting outside of the network. With the ever-increasing amount of malicious software and the new generation of hackers cropping up, the investment you make in protecting your machine and network is invaluable. Without this protection, your network or computer can be compromised without your knowledge and your private data can be stolen right out from under your nose.

Another security measure you can take which is often overlooked is to properly manage your passwords. First, you want to make sure that your passwords are a mixture of letters and numbers. This will stymie any password cracking software that tries to crack the code through brute force by taking away the easy combinations of simple words or numbers. The more characters in your password, the more secure it is. Do not use the same password for all applications and websites. Though it is easier to remember a single password, if you only use one, all of your data is in jeopardy if your password is compromised. If you have a difficult time remembering completely different passwords, use variations of a central theme. If you have to write them down, ensure that the list is stored in a safe, locked location. You will want to change your passwords every few months to make sure that they remain safe.

Your personal data is personal. You should do everything you can to ensure that it is protected and kept out of the hands of others.
